We look forward to a successful start of the semester in Duisburg. The beginning this year was very special: The students of the Mechatronics Department at the University of Duisburg-Essen started their final year with a large practical project – the Solar Car. Together with the initiators Jörn Linke, branch manager NRW of ITQ GmbH, Dr.-Ing. Niko Maas, Academic Councilor in the Mechatronics Department, and ITQ working students developed a Solar Car that was as inexpensive as possible, built from old and new car parts.
The seventh solar car prototype of the successful and innovative ITQ student project was created within a five-day Makeathon from August 17 to 21, 2020 in Duisburg. The new team, consisting of 17 students from the University of Duisburg-Essen and team colleagues from Munich, was able to present a roadworthy solar car after only five days, despite current strict hygiene measures.
City Director Martin Murrack attended the closing event as a prominent supporter of the campaign. Visibly proud, he took the Solar Car’s maiden voyage. The student team will work on Smart Features such as Autonomous Parking in the coming months. There is now a test vehicle for research and teaching for the university chair and the next generation of students.
We are very pleased that ITQ was once again able to support the training of highly motivated Young Talents and we would like to thank the sponsors of this project: Beckhoff Automation GmbH & Co. KG, The MathWorks GmbH as well as Förderverein für Ingenieurwissenschaften Duisburg e.V.
